Tanegashima, 20 October 2026 – The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency launched its Martian Moons eXploration spacecraft aboard H3 Launch Vehicle No. 10 at 4:41 a.m. Japan Standard Time from the Tanegashima Space Center. The MMX mission aims to collect material from Phobos, one of Mars’s two moons, and return the samples to Earth in 2031.
For Asian businesses and investors, the successful launch advances Japan’s position in deep-space engineering and creates a demanding test for spacecraft, propulsion, robotics and precision-instrument suppliers. The launch is confirmed, but the sample return remains a multi-year objective. Commercial and scientific value will depend on MMX reaching Mars, completing its Phobos operations and bringing usable material home safely.
