Former Citigroup Executive Sues, Says Firm Mishandled Sexual Harassment Claims

New York, 26 January 2026 – A former senior executive at Citigroup has filed a lawsuit alleging the bank improperly handled her sexual harassment complaint, claiming the firm failed to address misconduct and then retaliated against her when she raised concerns about how her case was treated. The legal action underscores continuing challenges for major financial institutions in managing workplace conduct and protecting employees who report inappropriate behaviour.

According to court filings, the former vice president said she was subject to unwelcome comments and conduct by a senior colleague during her tenure. She asserts that when she reported the incidents, senior managers and human resources did not respond adequately to protect her or investigate thoroughly. In subsequent months, she says her performance reviews and work responsibilities were negatively impacted as a result of raising the issue, actions she characterises as retaliation.

The lawsuit, filed in New York state court, seeks unspecified damages and alleges violations of state and federal employment laws, including claims of hostile work environment and unlawful retaliation. It accuses the bank of failing to follow its own policies for handling harassment complaints in a timely and effective manner.

In response, a Citigroup spokesperson said the bank β€œtakes all complaints seriously, has well-established procedures to address misconduct, and will defend itself vigorously in court.” The bank noted it cannot comment on litigation specifics.

Workplace experts say cases like this, while relatively rare, can have broader implications for corporate culture and risk management, especially in heavily regulated industries such as finance. They emphasise that clear, trusted reporting channels and protections against retaliation are key to ensuring employee safety and organisational accountability.

The suit adds to a string of high-profile workplace-related legal battles in the financial sector, where banks and other firms have strengthened harassment policies in recent years but still face scrutiny from regulators, employees and advocacy groups on effective implementation.
