Disney Names Debra O’Connell Chairman of Disney Entertainment Television

LOS ANGELES, 16 March 2026 – The Walt Disney Company has appointed longtime executive Debra O’Connell as chairman of Disney Entertainment Television, placing her in charge of several of the company’s most influential television brands.

O’Connell, a nearly 30-year veteran of Disney, will oversee a broad portfolio that includes ABC Entertainment, Disney Branded Television, Hulu Originals and National Geographic Content.

Expanded Role Across Disney’s Media Platforms

In addition to her new responsibilities, O’Connell will continue leading ABC News and Disney’s ABC-owned television stations, maintaining oversight of both news and entertainment operations within the company.

Her promotion reflects Disney’s effort to streamline leadership across its television businesses and better integrate content creation across networks and streaming platforms.

The appointment is part of a broader organisational shift designed to align film, streaming, television, gaming and digital entertainment under a more unified structure within Disney’s entertainment division.

Leadership Reshuffle at Disney

Under the new structure, Disney’s games division, led by executive vice president Sean Shoptaw, will also be incorporated into the company’s entertainment segment to strengthen collaboration with streaming services such as Disney+ and Hulu.

Both O’Connell and Shoptaw will report to Dana Walden, who will formally assume her role on March 18, 2026 as part of Disney’s evolving leadership structure.

Walden oversees the company’s global television and streaming operations, including ABC, FX, Hulu Originals and National Geographic content production.

Strategic Shift Toward Integrated Entertainment

The leadership move underscores Disney’s strategy to deepen integration across its content ecosystem, especially as traditional television, streaming and interactive entertainment increasingly converge.

Disney’s entertainment segment manages the company’s global media content portfolio, including television production, streaming platforms and film studios, making the role of chairman of Disney Entertainment Television one of the most influential positions within the media giant’s content organisation.

By placing an experienced executive like O’Connell in the role, Disney aims to strengthen collaboration across its broadcast networks, streaming platforms and digital entertainment businesses as the media industry continues to shift toward streaming-driven growth.
