Singapore, 5 August 2026 – The prospect of ordinary smartphones connecting directly to satellites is moving from demonstration to commercial reality, challenging Asian telecommunications companies to rethink where their networks end and how coverage is priced. Rather than replacing terrestrial towers, direct-to-device services are emerging as a complementary layer for remote areas, maritime routes and disaster zones.
Industry data show that 17 operator partnerships had launched satellite-to-cellphone services by March 2026. Another 25 partnerships were evaluating, testing or trialling the technology, while 64 planned launches. In total, 97 operators were investing in satellite-to-cellphone connectivity, supported by at least eight compatible chipsets. That pipeline suggests non-terrestrial coverage is becoming a strategic network decision rather than a niche emergency feature.
