10 September 2025 – The waning enthusiasm of crypto investors has triggered steep declines in share prices of companies that aggressively stockpile digital assets, marking a sharp end to the summer’s “crypto treasury” mania.
Publicly traded firms widely known for leveraging capital—raising money via equity or debt to buy and retain cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin—have seen their stocks under pressure as Bitcoin itself slipped from recent highs, even amid lingering pro-crypto sentiment from U.S. leadership.
Strategy, led by Michael Taylor, which had soared to $457 in July, now trades around $328, trimming its year-to-date gains to about 13%. Over in Japan, Metaplanet shares have plummeted by more than 60% since peaking in June, despite still being up roughly 105% for the year.
Smaller players that pivoted into the crypto hoarding space—such as the UK’s Smarter Web Company and Alt5 Sigma (linked to Trump’s World Liberty Financial crypto venture)—have taken even larger hits, with share prices off approximately 70% and 63%, respectively.
Analyst Adam McCarthy from Kaiko points out these companies are highly leveraged bets on crypto volatility. “If Bitcoin drops 3%, they often fall multiples more—sometimes four or five times as much,” he cautioned. Retail investor panic selling only exacerbates downward spirals.
Across the board, companies including BitMine and GameSquare, which expanded into crypto—particularly Ethereum—have also been hit, each tumbling around 67% since July.
Investment Insight and Market Outlook
The collapse of crypto treasury stocks underscores the inherent risks of highly leveraged exposure to volatile digital asset markets. These firms’ valuations closely mirror crypto’s price swings—not fundamentals—making them highly vulnerable market plays.
For investors, the sell-off serves as a cautionary tale: speculative equity models premised on ever-rising crypto prices can unravel swiftly when sentiment reverses.
That said, the market may be entering a phase of recalibration. With Bitcoin stabilizing and regulatory clarity slowly emerging, attention may shift to diversification across the broader crypto ecosystem. However, investor caution is likely to remain elevated as we navigate heightened macroeconomic uncertainty and regulatory scrutiny.
