Shanghai, 4 September 2026 – China’s artificial-intelligence equity trade is confronting a more disciplined phase as leveraged investors reduce exposure, global bond yields climb and inflation concerns complicate the case for near-term policy support. Outstanding margin financing in the domestic stock market stood at 2.62 trillion yuan, equivalent to about US$390.1 billion, on Thursday. That was roughly 13% below the record 3.01 trillion yuan reached on 25 June, underscoring how quickly risk appetite can retreat when borrowing costs and earnings expectations move against crowded positions.
The pullback matters because margin finance had amplified the rush into semiconductors, software and computing-infrastructure companies during the earlier rally. When those trades reverse, falling prices can trigger forced selling as investors seek to restore collateral levels. Short positions, meanwhile, had risen to about 29.2 billion yuan, near a two-year high. The combination points to a market that is no longer rewarding exposure to the AI theme indiscriminately and is beginning to separate credible cash-flow prospects from speculative momentum.
