London, United Kingdom, 1 September 2026 – Britain’s finance minister said the government will use its spring spending review to establish a clearer route toward higher defence expenditure, bringing the timing and financing of its NATO commitments into sharper focus. The plan will address both the long-term goal of spending 3.5% of gross domestic product on defence by 2035 and the interim date for reaching 3%.
The announcement comes as investors assess how the government can fund security priorities without breaching its borrowing rules. The finance minister is scheduled to deliver his first budget on 28 October and has pledged to retain the fiscal framework inherited from the previous administration. Defence will then occupy a central position in next year’s spending review.
