Bitcoin Breaks Above $90,000 as Traders Bet on New-Year Rebound

By Chee Liang CFA2 min read

ASIA, 29 December 2025 —Bitcoin (BTC) climbed above the US $90,000 mark in Asian trading on Monday, sparking renewed optimism among cryptocurrency traders that the digital asset could be poised for a year-end and early-2026 rebound amid thinning markets and positioning ahead of New Year.

Data compiled by Bloomberg showed that Bitcoin rallied as much as 3.1 per cent to above $90,200 in Singapore before moderating, while Ethereum (ETH) also climbed, rising about 4 per cent to reclaim levels above $3,000.

Market Drivers and Sentiment

Crypto traders cited a mix of year-end positioning, thinner holiday liquidity and speculative bets on a January recovery as key forces driving Bitcoin’s move back above $90,000 after periods of price consolidation earlier in December.

Bitcoin’s price has experienced heightened volatility throughout 2025, including swings around the $90,000 level, as traders weigh macroeconomic signals, such as U.S. monetary policy expectations, and technical triggers that could affect crypto flows. Leading into this week’s rally, Bitcoin briefly dipped below $90,000 amid earlier risk-off sentiment before recovering strength.

Despite these ups and downs, the move above $90,000 is notable because it reasserts an important psychological threshold in crypto markets after Bitcoin’s roller-coaster year that saw prices fluctuate significantly from earlier 2025 highs.

What Traders Are Watching

Analysts note that Bitcoin’s performance at the close of 2025 may set the tone for early 2026 price dynamics, with several factors on traders’ radar:

  • Liquidity Constraints: Holiday-reduced trading volumes often amplify price moves as fewer participants are active.
  • Macro Cross-Assets: Interactions with traditional markets, such as equities and FX, influence risk appetite for digital assets.
  • Technical Levels: Breaches of key price bands like $90,000 can act as triggers for short-term momentum trades.

Cryptocurrency markets remain sensitive to broader investor sentiment and regulatory developments worldwide, and BTC’s resurgence above $90,000 reflects traders’ willingness to position for potential upside as the calendar turns.

The Ledger Asia View:

Bitcoin’s breakout above $90,000 illustrates the continuing interplay between speculation, market structure and macro expectations in the crypto space. While such levels do not guarantee sustained long-term trends, they highlight how psychological price thresholds can shape short-term trading behaviour, especially during historically volatile year-end periods. As regional and global crypto ecosystems mature, these price moves also influence institutional interest and retail engagement across Asia’s rapidly expanding digital asset markets.
