Sydney, 2 September 2026 – Australian equities fell sharply as higher oil prices and rising global bond yields revived inflation concerns and increased expectations of tighter monetary policy. The S&P/ASX 200 declined about 1% to 8,978.40, with weakness spreading across most sectors. Technology and mining shares led the retreat, while energy producers gained as crude prices advanced. The pattern underscored the difficult combination confronting investors: an external energy shock that benefits producers but raises costs for the wider economy.
Oil’s move above US$95 a barrel intensified concern that Australia’s inflation path could remain sticky. Higher fuel costs feed directly into transport and household budgets and indirectly into freight, manufacturing and services. If businesses pass those costs through, the Reserve Bank of Australia may have less flexibility to ease policy and could face pressure to tighten further. Rate-sensitive sectors are therefore being repriced against the possibility that borrowing costs stay elevated longer than previously expected.
