Sydney, 28 September 2026 – Australian shares entered the new week without a clear direction as investors prepared for the Reserve Bank of Australia’s monetary-policy decision on Tuesday. Early S&P/ASX 200 futures were approximately flat at 8,720 points in a market snapshot around 7am Australian eastern time. That was a signal of tentative positioning, not a prediction of the cash-market close. The benchmark had finished Friday near 8,665 points after four consecutive weekly declines, leaving traders especially sensitive to any change in interest-rate guidance.
The policy decision is due at 2.30pm Australian eastern time on 29 September, according to the central bank’s published calendar. Its cash-rate target stood at 4.35% before the meeting. Investors therefore face a genuine policy event rather than a completed rate move: neither an increase nor a hold should be described as certain ahead of the announcement. The subsequent statement, and the governor’s press conference, will matter for how markets price the path beyond September as much as for the immediate decision.
