Anwar Calls on Diplomats to Deepen Strategic Ties and Fuel Investment

PUTRAJAYA, 9 September 2025 — In a clarion call to Malaysia’s diplomatic corps, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged envoys to strengthen strategic partnerships and proactively attract foreign direct investment (FDI), underscoring economic diplomacy as a vital lever amid global challenges.

Delivering a forceful message during a high-level diplomatic briefing, Anwar emphasized that in a volatile international climate marked by protectionism and slow economic growth, Malaysia must counter uncertainty by cultivating stronger, trust-based ties with global partners. Dialogue with diplomats, he said, should prioritize not just traditional trade outreach—but also deeper engagement in digital, green, and financial corridors.

Quoting from his speech, Anwar noted: “Deepening ties and strategic links with diverse partners is not a choice – it is a strategic imperative. But we must engage as equals.”

The appeal comes as the Prime Minister prepares to conclude a series of high-profile foreign meetings, including fresh talks with Luxembourg’s leadership to expand cooperation in trade and logistics.

Why It Matters for ASEAN’s Investment Landscape

For Asia’s investors and policymakers, Anwar’s priorities are a clarion signal. Elevating diplomacy into direct economic outcomes—especially in innovation, sustainability, and infrastructure—could accelerate investor sentiment. It reflects a broader shift toward aligning diplomatic activity with pragmatic, impact-driven metrics for growth.
