Anwar Arrives in Doha Ahead of Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Doha at 9.30pm local time (2.30am, 15 Sept - Malaysia) and was accorded a Guard of Honour by the Qatar Amiri Guard before being welcomed by Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

Doha / Kuala Lumpur, 15 September 2025 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived today in Doha, Qatar to participate in the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit, a gathering convened to address urgent issues affecting Muslim-majority countries. His attendance signals Malaysia’s intent to contribute more actively to regional discussions and global Muslim concerns.

The summit, called on short notice by Qatari leadership, will focus on a number of pressing matters — including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, ways to counter Islamophobia, and strengthening cooperation among Arab and Islamic states in trade, security, and cultural affairs. Leaders from dozens of countries are expected to attend.

Upon landing, Anwar was received by high-ranking Qatari officials and began engaging in bilateral meetings. Observers say Malaysia may use the summit’s platform to push for stronger regional coordination on humanitarian relief, and explore ways to strengthen diplomatic ties with Gulf Arab countries.

This visit comes at a time of global instability — rising conflicts, displacement crises, and concerns over global Muslim minorities. Malaysia under Anwar’s leadership has in recent months signalled a more assertive foreign policy, particularly in Middle Eastern affairs, including pushing for multilateral diplomacy and humanitarian advocacy.

In his departure remarks in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar emphasized that the summit is an opportunity to “raise the voices of the oppressed, advocate for justice, and unify the Ummah in addressing issues that transcend borders.” He also stressed Malaysia’s support for peaceful resolutions, respect for international law, and the importance of releasing humanitarian aid without obstruction.

Officials accompanying Anwar include the Foreign Minister, senior defense and security advisors, as well as delegates from Malaysia’s humanitarian and foreign policy divisions. Malaysia is expected to endorse or co-sponsor joint statements or resolutions during the summit, particularly those related to humanitarian corridors, refugee protection, and interfaith dialogue.

Malaysia’s engagement is likely to draw interest both domestically and abroad. For many in Malaysia, such summits serve as a barometer of the government’s foreign policy orientation and moral global standing. Some analysts note that how substantively such participation translates into policy will be equally important as the diplomatic optics.
