Alibaba’s Amap Transforms into Lifestyle Guide with AI-Powered ‘Street Stars’ Rankings

SHANGHAI, 10 September 2025 — Alibaba has reimagined its digital mapping platform, Amap, pushing it far beyond navigation to become a formidable rival to Meituan in the local lifestyle arena. The company rolled out its AI-powered “Street Stars” feature—rankings of restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions that mark a decisive step into local business discovery.

The new feature, aimed at Amap’s 170 million daily users, will initially rank 1.6 million listings across 300 Chinese cities. To drive user adoption, Alibaba is offering RMB 1 billion (~US$140 million) in incentives, including ride-hailing and service coupons.

Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu framed “Street Stars” as part of the company’s long-term shift to a “comprehensive consumption platform”—turning Amap into a gateway for AI-enhanced lifestyle services beyond maps.

However, the push comes amid regulatory scrutiny over escalating “instant retail” price wars between Alibaba and Meituan. Authorities have expressed concern about aggressive discount-driven competition, cautioning against a self-defeating race to the bottom as consumer demand remains fragile.

Strategic Significance for Southeast Asia

Elevating Search to Lifestyle Discovery
Alibaba’s expansion of Amap responds to evolving consumer expectations: users demand not just directions, but curated recommendations—with AI-refined intelligence at the helm. By layering local rankings onto mapping, Alibaba ups the game for regional retail giants seeking to integrate search and consumption.

Intensified Competition in Local Services
The move thrusts Amap directly into competition with Meituan’s entrenched lifestyle ecosystem. As both platforms curate real-time rankings, the battle for consumer attention and local merchant partnerships heats up—not just in China, but across markets where they compete for regional dominance.

Deeper AI-driven Ecosystem Integration
By embedding “Street Stars” into a navigation app, Alibaba accelerates its AI-first ambitions—blending commerce, discovery, and daily utility into one interface. This alignment mirrors broader trends across Asia, where mapping, payments, and e-commerce increasingly merge into intelligent, super-app ecosystems.
