Kuala Lumpur, 1 October 2025 – Betamek Berhad, one of Malaysia’s leading automotive electronics manufacturers, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Jiangsu Yibang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., aiming to accelerate the development and manufacturing of electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions for the ASEAN market.
The agreement, signed through Betamek’s wholly owned subsidiary, Betamek Research Sdn Bhd, will see the two companies collaborate on technical research and development, supply chain coordination, contract manufacturing, and regional business development. The partnership underscores Betamek’s ambition to diversify beyond traditional automotive electronics manufacturing services (EMS) into the fast-growing EV and green technology ecosystem.
Yibang, a national high-tech enterprise in China, specialises in EV communication technologies including Electric Vehicle Communication Converters (EVCC) and Supply Equipment Communication Controllers (SECC). Its solutions, already used by global carmakers such as Perodua, VinFast, Mitsubishi, and Jiangling Motors, are certified by TÜV Rheinland and DEKRA and fully compliant with international EV charging protocols.
Under the MoU, Betamek will establish Yibang-compliant facilities in Malaysia to assemble EVCC and SECC devices. Yibang has agreed to exclusively outsource the manufacturing and assembly of its systems to Betamek for jointly developed ASEAN markets. Both companies will also undertake joint marketing and business development initiatives to secure customer orders and accelerate the rollout of EV charging communication technologies in the region.
“This MoU marks a significant step for Betamek in strengthening its foothold in the electric vehicle ecosystem,” said Encik Muhammad Fauzi Bin Abd Ghani, Executive Director of Betamek. “By leveraging Yibang’s advanced technologies alongside our local manufacturing expertise, we are well-positioned to support the growth of EV adoption in Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.”
Mr. Ma TianYi, General Manager of Jiangsu Yibang, added: “Partnering with Betamek provides us with a trusted local partner that has the engineering and manufacturing strength to scale our solutions for ASEAN. Together, we can accelerate time-to-market for EV charging communication systems and meet the rising demand for reliable, standard-compliant solutions in the region.”
The MoU provides a preliminary framework for collaboration, with both companies planning to sign a definitive agreement within 12 months to formalise commercial terms and long-term commitments. The partnership builds on Betamek’s recent investment in innovation, including its new R&D Centre in Rawang, Selangor, launched in March 2025 and officiated by MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
Investor Insights for Asia
This collaboration reflects two key themes reshaping the region: ASEAN’s accelerating EV transition and the strategic importance of localisation in supply chains. For Malaysian and regional investors, the deal highlights how domestic firms like Betamek are aligning with global technology leaders to capture growth in EV infrastructure, an area expected to attract both policy incentives and private capital flows.
Betamek’s pivot into metal recycling and now EV charging technologies suggests a long-term diversification play, balancing its dependence on the conventional automotive EMS business. For investors, this may reduce cyclical risk and position the group within green mobility and sustainability-linked sectors, which are likely to see strong growth under ASEAN’s carbon-reduction agendas.
However, execution risks remain. Market uptake of EV charging technologies in ASEAN depends on government policy, charging infrastructure rollout, and consumer adoption rates. Betamek’s ability to scale Yibang’s solutions, manage costs, and secure anchor customers will be crucial in determining whether the collaboration delivers sustained value.
