Kuala Lumpur, 12 September 2025 – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has assured Malaysians that the price of RON95 petrol will be reduced by the end of this month, as part of broader efforts to ease the cost-of-living pressures faced by households.
Speaking in public remarks, Anwar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to adjusting the price after subsidy reforms. According to previous government statements, the targeted rate for RON95 following subsidy rationalisation would be about RM1.99 per litre, down from the current rate under blanket subsidy regimes.
The announcement aligns with multiple recent policy moves, which include cash handouts for Malaysians, efforts to reform fuel subsidies, and other targeted relief measures aimed at shielding consumers from inflation.
Anwar said that while detailed implementation plans—including eligibility, enforcement, and timing—are still being finalised, the government is confident it can deliver the reduction within the month. “We are working on ensuring the needed mechanisms are in place so that the price cut is carried out responsibly and transparently,” he added.
Economic analysts welcomed the announcement, but urged caution. They noted that successful implementation will depend on timely reforms to the subsidy system, ensuring supply chain stability, and maintaining fiscal discipline. Delays in any of these areas could push back the delivery of the promised petrol price relief.
For many Malaysians now facing rising daily expenses, the prospective drop in RON95 pricing offers a much-anticipated relief. As the month unfolds, attention will be on how the government translates its promise into action at the pumps.
