Laos–Singapore 500MW Renewable Power Proposal Tests ASEAN Energy Integration

A proposed 500MW hydropower link would deepen regional electricity trade, but transmission, reliability and environmental safeguards remain unresolved.

Singapore, 30 October 2026 – Singapore’s energy-security plans could be strengthened by a proposal to import up to 500 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity from Laos, mainly from hydropower dams. The proposal is being developed by Tuas Power, a Laotian conglomerate and Laos’s national grid operator. If realised, 500MW would equal slightly more than 4 per cent of Singapore’s current generation capacity of 12 gigawatts, giving the plan a meaningful scale even before commercial terms are settled.

The proposal matters to Asian businesses and investors because electricity access is becoming a core constraint on industrial growth, data centres and decarbonisation. The confirmed fact is that a 500MW import plan has been mooted; it is not yet a commissioned project or a binding supply contract. Its commercial value will depend on transmission arrangements, price, reliability, environmental standards and the ability of both countries to coordinate a cross-border power system.
