Gdansk, Poland, 28 October 2026 – Scale AI has rejected complaints alleging that its Outlier platform unlawfully monitors freelance workers who help produce data for artificial-intelligence systems. The complaints were filed with data-protection regulators in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria on 27 October and concern monitoring practices affecting a workforce described by the complainants as more than 900,000 freelancers.
The dispute matters to AI companies, digital platforms and investors because data labelling and model-training work depend on a distributed contractor base, while monitoring tools are increasingly used to verify time, identity and work quality. The complaints set out allegations, not regulatory findings; Scale AI says its practices are disclosed and consent-based, so the central question is how regulators assess the legal basis and safeguards.
