Menlo Park, 22 October 2026 – Meta Platforms, Inc. has approved a share and retention arrangement under which chief executive Mark Zuckerberg committed to remain in California, or wherever Meta maintains its headquarters, for eight years. The agreement emerged from discussions about preserving his voting control and addressing concerns related to California’s proposed one-time 5% tax on billionaire wealth.
The arrangement matters to investors because Zuckerberg controls Meta’s strategic direction while the company plans capital-intensive artificial-intelligence expansion. His continued leadership may reduce succession uncertainty, but the tax proposal has not yet been approved by voters. The agreement therefore addresses a governance and retention risk linked partly to a possible future tax, not an existing final liability.
