Kuala Lumpur, 20 October 2026 – Malaysia’s Transport Ministry is drafting measures to increase penalties for cable theft affecting public-transport operators, including the East Coast Rail Link, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said. The proposals must pass through Parliament and remain under development. Malaysia Rail Link and other operators are also exploring closed-circuit television and additional technology to prevent theft.
For businesses and investors, cable theft is an infrastructure and service-reliability risk rather than a minor property offence. Disruption can delay passengers, damage signalling and communications, and raise repair and security costs. The drafting process is confirmed, but no final penalties have been enacted. Loke stressed that stronger punishment alone would not work without effective prevention by operators.
