Kulai, 27 September 2026 – Malaysia’s telecommunications regulator and mobile operators blocked 101.66 million scam or spoofed calls between February and August, according to Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. The figure covers attempted calls stopped through the Inter Operator Spoofing Gateway, a network-level system introduced this year to detect numbers that appear local while originating from abroad. It is a measure of traffic intercepted, not a count of victims protected or money saved.
Caller-ID spoofing exploits a basic trust signal: a recipient sees a familiar Malaysian number format and may be more willing to answer. By testing whether a claimed local number is genuinely associated with a caller who is roaming overseas, participating operators can identify suspicious international-origin traffic before it reaches customers. The initiative depends on information sharing and consistent enforcement across networks; a fragmented system would leave routes through which fraudulent calls could still pass.
