Seberang Jaya, 27 September 2026 – Tourism Malaysia is seeking cheaper domestic air travel after discussions with local airlines, positioning fare affordability as a practical test for the country’s fast-growing travel economy. The proposal is still at the discussion stage: no airline commitment, discount timetable or funding mechanism has been announced. For tourism operators, the difference between an aspiration and a bookable lower fare will determine whether additional demand reaches destinations beyond major urban centres.
The tourism board’s domestic and events director, Mohd Roslan Abdullah, raised the issue during a domestic-travel carnival at Sunway Carnival Mall in Penang. Industry participants have complained that high fares constrain travel decisions, while elevated fuel costs and household living expenses increase the pressure on discretionary budgets. Roslan said demand remained robust despite those headwinds. That suggests price reductions could widen access, but it does not prove that cheaper tickets alone would produce a proportionate increase in trips.
