New York, 22 September 2026 – Vietnam and the United States say negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement are approaching a final outcome, giving exporters a more constructive signal without yet providing the terms they need to plan. Vietnam’s President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York on 21 September, according to the Vietnamese government. The two sides have not announced a signed agreement.
Greer described the negotiating teams as close to a final result and said an implemented deal could open further opportunities. Lam welcomed the progress but also asked Washington to take a comprehensive approach to unresolved trade issues, including investigations under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974. Those issues matter because a general pledge of cooperation cannot substitute for clear rules on tariffs, market access and enforcement.
