Putrajaya, 22 September 2026 – Malaysia and China are strengthening cooperation in marine research, environmental management and the blue economy, opening a potential channel for projects that combine conservation with commercial development. The latest discussions took place during a meeting between Malaysia’s natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, Arthur Joseph Kurup, and China’s deputy natural resources minister, Sun Shuxian. A proposed cooperation agreement was among the matters discussed, not a completed investment programme.
The Malaysian ministry said the talks covered marine science, technology, exchange of expertise and management of ocean ecosystems. Those areas matter economically because fisheries, shipping, tourism and coastal infrastructure depend on healthy marine assets. Better mapping and management can reduce environmental loss, but a durable investment case will require defined projects, measurable outcomes and financing arrangements rather than broad diplomatic language.
