Hangzhou, 22 September 2026 – Alibaba has set out an ambitious expansion across artificial-intelligence models, processors and data centres, with chief executive Eddie Wu outlining plans to train a model containing five trillion to 10 trillion parameters. The company also unveiled its Zhenwu V900 AI chip and set a goal for global cloud data-centre capacity to exceed 20 gigawatts by 2032. The scale is striking, but the investor question is whether deployment and revenue can keep pace with the capital required.
Wu presented the plans at Alibaba Cloud’s Apsara Conference in Hangzhou. The proposed model would be substantially larger than the company’s current flagship, but parameter count alone is not a measure of commercial usefulness. Training quality, inference cost, reliability and demand from paying customers will determine whether more computing creates value. Investors should resist treating a larger model as an automatic competitive advantage.
