Kuala Lumpur, 22 September 2026 – Bursa Malaysia opened higher on Tuesday before the benchmark index slipped back towards the previous close, a reminder that bargain hunting can improve market breadth without immediately lifting the headline gauge. At 9.10am, the FBM KLCI was down 0.13 point at 1,666.81 after opening 2.80 points higher at 1,669.74. The timing matters: these are early-session readings, not the day’s closing performance, and investors should avoid extrapolating a small index move into a decisive shift in sentiment.
The more constructive signal came from participation beneath the index. Gainers outnumbered losers 265 to 150 at the same snapshot, while 294 counters were unchanged. Trading volume stood at 314.78 million shares valued at RM148.07 million. That combination suggests interest in selected names even as some index heavyweights failed to hold their gains. For portfolio managers, the distinction between a broad advance and a concentrated benchmark rally is important because the latter can mask weak conviction elsewhere in the market.
