London, 16 September 2026 – United Kingdom workers are spending nearly GBP1 billion a year of their own money on artificial-intelligence tools used for work, highlighting a widening gap between employee adoption and formal corporate provision. The trend can raise productivity, but it also introduces data-security, governance and workforce-equity risks for employers.
A workforce survey found that one in six workers pays personally for an AI service used in their job. About two-thirds have tried generative AI, and nearly one-quarter use it daily. These figures show that adoption is already embedded in routine tasks rather than confined to technology teams.
