Oil Market Tightens as 2026 Demand and Supply Forecasts Fall

Paris, France, 12 August 2026 – The global oil market is entering a tighter and more volatile phase as disrupted Gulf exports, depleted inventories and elevated fuel prices reshape the outlook for supply, consumption and refining through the rest of 2026.

World oil demand is now forecast to decline by 1.6 million barrels per day this year, 510,000 barrels per day more than the previous estimate. The contraction is expected to ease from 4.9 million barrels per day in the second quarter to 2.8 million in the third, before demand returns to growth in the final quarter. Demand is projected to expand by 2.4 million barrels per day in 2027.
