Jakarta, 12 August 2026 – Indonesia has agreed to lift an investment moratorium on ≈ after compensation linked to the 2009 Montara oil spill was paid, clearing a major obstacle to renewed energy investment.
The long-running dispute followed a blowout at the Montara oilfield in the Timor Sea. Indonesia pursued compensation for environmental and economic damage affecting coastal communities, while a separate settlement agreed in 2022 provided A$192.5 million, about US$135.85 million, to fishers and seaweed farmers in East Nusa Tenggara.
