Canberra, 4 August 2026 – Australian household spending strengthened in June as elevated fuel costs and a sharp rise in electric-vehicle purchases reshaped consumer outlays, highlighting how an energy shock can support nominal expenditure while accelerating structural change in the car market.
The national statistics office released its June Monthly Household Spending Indicator on Tuesday, extending a run of firm nominal spending after May’s 1.3% monthly increase and 5.5% annual gain. The June result was influenced by transport-related expenditure, where higher fuel prices raised household bills even as buyers increasingly shifted toward battery and plug-in vehicles.
