Rafizi’s Rise as a Rival Raises Malaysia’s Political Risk Premium

Kuala Lumpur, 4 August 2026 – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is facing a sharper political challenge from former ally Rafizi Ramli, whose return through Parti Bersama Malaysia is adding another layer of uncertainty to Malaysia’s coalition landscape and the policy outlook watched by investors.

Rafizi, a former economy minister and former deputy president of Anwar’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat, took over Bersama with former minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad in May. The move transformed an internal party split into an external electoral threat, supported by several former PKR figures and aimed at voters who once formed part of Pakatan Harapan’s reform-oriented urban base.
