Apple Unveils Second-Generation AirPods Max Priced at US$549

Cupertino, 16 March 2026 – Apple has unveiled the second generation of its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, more than five years after the original model debuted in 2020, as the tech giant seeks to strengthen its position in the high-end audio market.

The new headphones are priced at US$549, the same launch price as the first-generation model, and introduce several hardware and software upgrades designed to improve audio quality and communication features.

Major Upgrade Powered by Apple’s H2 Chip

The second-generation AirPods Max are powered by Apple’s H2 chip, enabling improved performance and enhanced audio processing compared with the earlier model.

Key upgrades include:

  • Enhanced active noise cancellation (ANC) for better isolation from external sounds
  • Improved microphone system for clearer calls and voice recognition
  • Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness, which automatically adjust audio levels based on surrounding activity
  • Live translation, allowing real-time speech translation using Apple’s AI-driven features
  • Lossless audio support via USB-C connection, aimed at professional and high-fidelity audio users

The new model also improves transparency mode and voice isolation to deliver a more natural listening experience and clearer communication during calls.

Availability and Market Strategy

Apple said the headphones will be available for pre-order starting March 25 in more than 30 countries, with retail availability expected early next month.

The launch represents the first major overhaul of the AirPods Max lineup since its introduction in 2020, highlighting Apple’s effort to expand its ecosystem of premium accessories alongside iPhones, Macs and other devices.

Industry analysts say Apple is targeting a competitive market dominated by high-end audio brands such as Sony, Bose and Sennheiser, where demand for premium noise-cancelling headphones continues to grow globally.

AI Features Increasingly Central to Apple Devices

The inclusion of real-time translation and adaptive listening features reflects Apple’s broader push to embed artificial intelligence across its product lineup.

With AI capabilities becoming a key selling point for consumer electronics, Apple is increasingly integrating intelligent software functions across devices—from smartphones and wearables to headphones, aimed at creating a seamless ecosystem experience.

The upgraded AirPods Max therefore represent not just an audio refresh but also another step in Apple’s strategy to bring AI-powered personal technology deeper into everyday consumer devices.
