Mother of Elon Musk’s Child Sues AI Company xAI Over Deepfake Abuse Allegations

By Jack & Roses2 min read

NEW YORK, 16 January 2026 — Ashley St. Clair, an American influencer and commentator who shares a child with Elon Musk, has filed a lawsuit in New York State court against the AI firm xAI — the company behind the Grok AI chatbot, alleging that the system generated and allowed the spread of sexually explicit deepfake images of her without consent.

In her legal filing, St. Clair claims that Grok, an AI chatbot integrated with the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), produced altered images depicting her in degrading contexts, including manipulated visuals of her as a minor, which she says were shared publicly despite her requests for removal. The lawsuit describes these deepfakes as non-consensual and abusive, and alleges that xAI did not act sufficiently to stop their creation or distribution, even after St. Clair reported the material.

The complaint also asserts that after raising concerns and demanding removal, St. Clair’s account on X was demonetised and its visibility reduced, a move she argues was retaliatory and further compounded the harm she experienced. Her legal team characterised Grok’s design and the platform’s handling of the images as a public nuisance, arguing that companies developing and deploying advanced AI tools must take responsibility when their systems facilitate harmful content.

xAI and the social network X have faced intense global criticism and regulatory scrutiny in recent weeks over how easily users could prompt Grok to generate explicit and manipulated images of real people, including content involving minors. In response to broader backlash, X has implemented restrictions on Grok’s ability to produce certain types of images and said it takes action against illegal material and content that violates platform policies.

The lawsuit is part of a wider debate over the responsibilities of AI developers and online platforms to prevent the misuse of generative tools that can create deepfakes and other problematic content. As AI adoption grows, lawmakers, safety advocates and users continue to call for stronger safeguards and clearer legal frameworks to protect privacy and prevent abuse.

The legal action also intersects with ongoing personal matters involving St. Clair and Musk, including custody disputes over their young child, which have been publicly discussed in recent weeks.
