Baidu AI Chip Unit Kunlunxin Picks Banks For About $2 Billion Hong Kong IPO

By Chee Liang CFA3 min read

BEIJING/HONG KONG, 7 January 2026 — Baidu Inc.’s AI chip division Kunlunxin is ramping up plans for a Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) that could raise roughly $2 billion, as China’s drive for tech self-reliance fuels investor demand for semiconductor and artificial intelligence hardware plays.

According to people familiar with the matter, Kunlunxin has selected China International Capital Corp., Citic Securities Co. and Huatai Securities Co. as lead banks on the potential offering, with China Securities International also working on the deal. The exact timing and structure of the IPO have not been finalised, with details, including final pricing, valuation and shareholder allocations, still under wraps.

Strategic Spin-Off Amid China’s AI Chip Push

Kunlunxin, a unit that designs AI accelerators and high-performance processing chips, was spun out of Baidu in the early 2020s but remains majority-owned by the Chinese search giant. The company’s expertise centers on AI compute systems used in data centres and cloud infrastructures, critical components in generative AI training and inference workloads.

Baidu first confidentially filed for a Hong Kong listing on 1 January 2026, a sign of broader momentum in China’s semiconductor sector and buoyant IPO market in Hong Kong. The filing follows heightened investor appetite for tech hardware and semiconductor assets as Beijing pushes to reduce reliance on Western chip technologies amid export controls and ongoing U.S.–China tech tensions.

Market participants say the move could unlock significant value for Kunlunxin by giving investors a clearer lens into the chip maker’s performance and growth prospects, rather than being bundled within Baidu’s broader corporate valuation. After news of the confidential filing surfaced, Baidu’s shares jumped sharply in Hong Kong trading, reflecting early investor enthusiasm.

Market Context And Industry Implications

Kunlunxin’s IPO drive takes place against a backdrop of a resurgent Hong Kong capital market, where 2025 saw a strong rebound in technology and semiconductor listings. Chinese AI and semiconductor firms, including Biren Technology and MiniMax, have already made high-profile debuts, drawing significant capital and retail interest, and setting a constructive tone for new offerings.

The IPO could help fund expanded R&D, production capacity and ecosystem partnerships, as Kunlunxin competes with both domestic peers and foreign suppliers in a semiconductor landscape shaped by geopolitical rivalry and rapid AI adoption. For Baidu, spinning out Kunlunxin may also sharpen its own strategic focus, allowing the parent to reinvest capital into its broader AI services, cloud, autonomous driving and core search businesses.

Analysts say that if Kunlunxin’s listing is successful, it would further cement Hong Kong’s role as a hub for major tech and AI chip IPOs, attracting global institutional capital and enhancing the international profile of China-based hardware innovators.
