SAN DIEGO, 30 August 2025 – Federal prosecutors in San Diego have announced a major breakthrough in a $65 million scam that targeted more than 2,000 mostly elderly Americans. In an unusual and high-profile development, investigators credit a group of YouTubers—working as “scambaiters”—for helping crack the case by exposing key figures in the fraud ring through coordinated sting videos. “Not all heroes wear capes,” U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon said. “Some have YouTube channels.”
Over the past week, law enforcement across California, New York, Michigan, and Texas arrested 25 of the 28 individuals indicted for their roles in the scam. The defendants face serious federal charges, including conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors say the ring, which operated from 2019 through at least April 2025, was made up primarily of Chinese nationals—many of them undocumented—who collaborated with India-based call centres to defraud elderly victims.
The operation followed a common yet ruthless pattern: victims received unsolicited calls, texts, or pop-ups directing them to contact call centres in India. There, they were deceived by callers posing as bank officials, government authorities, or tech support, and persuaded to transfer funds for supposedly urgent reasons. One victim—a 97-year-old Holocaust survivor’s widow—lost her entire life savings.
According to court documents, the YouTube channels Scammer Payback and Trilogy Media played a pivotal role in bringing the fraud ring to light. Through scambaiting videos posted in 2020 and 2021, the creators posed as unsuspecting victims, baited scam operators into accepting fake money packages, and confronted them on camera. One dramatic encounter revealed a scam ring member named Zhiyi Zhang receiving a decoy package under a false identity. This was later confirmed by investigators via rental records and footage, leading to Zhang’s arrest at Los Angeles International Airport on 19 August 2025.
These sting videos provided critical visual evidence that helped unmask key players and unravel the broader criminal network—an unconventional collaboration between citizen investigators and federal law enforcement.
