US Defence-Spending Push Risks Straining Indo-Pacific Alliances

Washington, 30 July 2026 – Washington’s demand that Asia-Pacific allies sharply increase defence spending may strengthen military capacity, but it also risks creating political and economic strains that weaken the alliances the United States wants to reinforce. The debate is shifting from whether regional budgets should rise to how quickly governments can move without damaging public support or strategic cohesion.

The Trump administration has promoted a global burden-sharing standard modelled on the North Atlantic alliance, including 3.5% of gross domestic product for core defence and another 1.5% for security-related investment. US officials have argued that China’s military expansion and North Korea’s weapons programmes require Asian partners to accelerate spending.
