Singapore, 7 September 2026 – UOB Kay Hian’s Singapore Alpha Picks portfolio outpaced the Straits Times Index in August on market-capitalisation and price-weighted measures, but the result also exposed a wide gap between its strongest large-cap holdings and weaker small-cap selections. The portfolio returned 5.6% on a market-capitalisation-weighted basis and 4.7% when price-weighted, compared with the benchmark’s 2.3% gain.
The outcome looked very different on an equal-weighted basis. The portfolio fell 4.6% month on month, underperforming the index by 6.9 percentage points. That divergence matters because it shows that a few larger positions generated enough gains to offset sharp losses elsewhere. For investors, the August scorecard is less a simple victory than a reminder that portfolio construction can determine whether headline performance reflects broad stock selection or concentrated winners.
