Los Angeles, 6 October 2026 – The arrest of a woman accused by United States authorities of surveilling relatives of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has turned a diplomatic dispute into a concrete corporate-security warning, highlighting how geopolitical rivalry can reach private homes, travel routes and ordinary business infrastructure.
Federal investigators arrested 34-year-old Wanying Zhang at Los Angeles International Airport as she allegedly prepared to travel to Shanghai. Authorities charged her with acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The complaint alleges that she gathered information in the Seattle area in September 2025 concerning the Taiwanese leader’s son and family, including images of a residence, vehicles and licence plates, before passing material to handlers in China.
