Incheon, 2 September 2026 – South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has called for conditions that could rebuild trust and restart dialogue between the United States and North Korea, describing recent moves by Washington as creating a limited possibility of change on the Korean Peninsula. Speaking at a policy dialogue of the National Unification Advisory Council’s Americas region, Lee framed constructive discussion as a necessary step toward peaceful coexistence rather than presenting negotiations as imminent.
The remarks come amid renewed attention to US-North Korea diplomacy after Washington scaled back parts of joint military activity with South Korea and signalled openness to talks. Pyongyang has remained resistant, arguing that reduced exercises do not alter what it sees as hostile policy. That gap means the diplomatic pathway remains narrow. Lee’s emphasis on creating conditions acknowledges that formal talks will require incremental confidence-building and coordination among Seoul, Washington and regional stakeholders.
