Seoul, 14 August 2026 – South Korea’s prime minister and Bill Gates have discussed cooperation on small modular reactors as rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence sharpens interest in reliable low-carbon power. The talks connect Korea’s nuclear supply-chain capabilities with a technology sector whose data centres require continuous, increasingly large energy loads.
Small modular reactors are designed to be built in smaller units than conventional nuclear plants, potentially allowing phased deployment and greater standardisation. Their commercial promise remains under evaluation because licensing, construction economics, waste management and public acceptance can affect timelines and cost.
