South Australia Launches A$3 Million Royal Commission into AI

Adelaide, Australia, 11 August 2026 – South Australia will establish the country’s first royal commission focused on artificial intelligence, examining how the technology affects employment, education, skills, public services and energy infrastructure while considering potential restrictions on its use.

The inquiry is expected to begin on 1 October and deliver its report no later than 1 July 2027. Premier Peter Malinauskas estimated the cost at about A$3 million and said businesses, unions, technology companies, industry groups and academics would be invited to participate. A commissioner has not yet been appointed.
