Kuala Lumpur, 15 September 2025 — SIRIM Berhad, Malaysia’s leading industrial research, standardisation, and certification body, is marking its 50th anniversary with a renewed emphasis on innovation, global competitiveness, and helping Malaysian industries meet rigorous international standards.
Formed in 1975, SIRIM has played a central role in driving Malaysia’s industrial competitiveness by certifying companies, supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and helping raise quality benchmarks nationally. Over the decades, it has expanded from its roots in standardisation and quality assurance to become a technology enabler, supporting sectors such as electric vehicles, AI, and sustainability.
Key Milestones and Recent Achievements
Among SIRIM’s standout achievements is the establishment of the National Rechargeable Battery Testing Centre, which supports Malaysia’s growing electric vehicle ecosystem. The centre provides critical testing infrastructure for battery reliability and safety.
Another major initiative is the SIRIM-Fraunhofer Programme, a partnership with Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute. More than 2,500 SMEs have benefited from this collaboration, gaining access to advanced technology, skills training, and productivity improvements.
Currently, SIRIM is preparing to roll out two new international certification systems in November: ISO 56001 Innovation Management System, which provides guidance for organisations to build and manage systematic innovation, and ISO/IEC 42001 Artificial Intelligence Management System, a framework aimed at ensuring responsible development and deployment of AI practices.
Looking Forward: Priorities for the Next 50 Years
According to Acting President and Group CEO Nik Sazali Nik Hussin, SIRIM’s golden jubilee is as much about renewal as it is about reflection. He noted that going forward, the organization will place greater focus on digitalisation, sustainability, and harnessing Industry 4.0 capabilities across Malaysia’s manufacturing and industrial sectors.
To celebrate its milestone, SIRIM has scheduled several events over the next year, including:
- The International Conference on Quality and Innovation 2025;
- The SIRIM Invention, Innovation and Technology Expo; and
- The ASEAN Technopreneurship Roundtable, which will bring together innovators, industry stakeholders, and policymakers from throughout Southeast Asia.
With five decades behind it, SIRIM aims to continue being a catalyst for sustainable industrial growth. Its leadership envisions its certification, standard-setting, and innovation services not merely keeping pace with global changes but helping Malaysian industry lead in key sectors and defining best practices regionally.
