Singapore, 6 October 2026 – Singapore’s decision to accede to the protocol guaranteeing the permanent neutrality of the Panama Canal adds a diplomatic layer to an expanding logistics relationship, linking two of the world’s most strategically placed transport hubs at a time when trade routes face geopolitical and climate-related disruption.
The announcement came during Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino’s state visit to Singapore from 3 to 5 October. The two governments also discussed closer cooperation in logistics, trade and investment, drawing on their positions at the entrances to major global shipping corridors. Singapore sits beside the Malacca Strait, while Panama controls the canal joining the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
