Sequel Talks Underway for Netflix’s Hit KPop Demon Hunters: Sony and Netflix in Early Negotiations

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are in early-stage discussions to develop a sequel to their surprise animated phenomenon, KPop Demon Hunters, which has swiftly become Netflix’s most-watched film ever with over 236 million views globally.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the 2025 animated musical features the K‑pop girl group Huntr/x—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who lead double lives as demon slayers. The original film struck a chord with viewers worldwide, propelled by its vibrant animation, infectious soundtrack, and cultural flair deeply rooted in Korean mythology.

The film’s sing‑along theatrical release further amplified its success, topping the North American box office with an estimated US$19.2 million in ticket sales. Meanwhile, Netflix has reportedly retained its momentum as it considers expanding the universe with not just a sequel—but a stage musical, live‑action adaptation, TV series, or short film bridging the main releases.

Insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter that while talks are underway, a formal greenlight remains conditional on contract terms between Sony and Netflix. Discussions include retaining Kang and Appelhans for future projects, with the sequel potentially exploring the untold stories of Mira and Zoey.
