Seoul’s Peace-Talk Proposal Reframes Korean Risk for Asian Investors

Seoul, 15 August 2026 – South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has proposed direct discussions with North Korea to formally end the Korean War, reopening a diplomatic path that could reshape security risk across Northeast Asia even as Pyongyang deepens its military relationship with Russia.

The 1950–1953 conflict ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreas technically at war. Speaking at a ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Lee urged the directly involved parties to set aside threats and begin talks on ending the conflict. He said such a process could also create room to discuss effective steps to halt the expansion of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.
