Seoul, 16 September 2026 – South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is due to meet United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on 18 September, placing alliance management, regional security and trade coordination back on the agenda. The meeting comes as Seoul balances defence commitments with economic exposure to China and uncertainty around Middle East deployments.
The foreign ministry confirmed the visit, but the final agenda remains subject to diplomatic coordination. Expected issues include deterrence on the Korean peninsula, implementation of bilateral economic commitments and Washington’s security requests. Any discussion of naval or logistical support near the Strait of Hormuz will be watched closely because it carries operational and political costs.
