Royal Selangor Polo & Equestrian Club has marked a new era at its 28-acre Cyberjaya home, combining more than a century of polo heritage with public access, community programmes and sports-tourism ambitions.

Cyberjaya, 3 October 2026 – The Royal Selangor Polo & Equestrian Club (RSPEC) has marked a major milestone in Selangor’s sporting heritage with a Royal Gala Dinner celebrating the Silver Jubilee of the reign of His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj and the development of the club’s new home in Cyberjaya.

The gala at Cyber Event Hall was graced by the Sultan of Selangor and Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin, alongside the Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

Also present were Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah and Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, together with other members of the Selangor and Pahang royal families.

Speaking at the event, RSPEC President Y.D.M. Engku Maharaja Lela Setia Paduka Dato’ Syed Budriz Putra Jamalullail said the new club represents the realisation of a vision conceived four years ago by the Sultan of Selangor — to establish a permanent home for polo in the state.

From Royal Vision to 28-Acre Equestrian Destination

The club identified a 28-acre site beside Cyberjaya Lake, with physical construction beginning in November 2024.

Developing the polo field alone involved moving approximately 42,000 tonnes of sand to the site through some 2,500 truck deliveries, illustrating the scale of work required to transform the site into a dedicated equestrian facility.

The centrepiece is a polo field measuring approximately 260 metres by 147 metres, surrounded by a one-kilometre track.

The wider complex includes 136 stables, groom quarters, an indoor equestrian arena and clubhouse.

Its social and recreational facilities include eight pickleball courts, a padel court and a mezzanine café overlooking the polo field.

Rather than functioning purely as a tournament venue, RSPEC intends the development to become a broader sporting, recreational and community destination.

Polo Heritage Dating Back to 1902

The new Cyberjaya home also carries forward more than a century of Selangor polo history.

Syed Budriz traced the club’s origins to 1902, when it was established by British officers at Port Swettenham, now Port Klang.

The club subsequently moved several times as Kuala Lumpur and Selangor developed, including a period when polo was played within a horse-racing circuit on land where KLCC now stands.

A further relocation took place during the tenure of Malaysia’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, with the club remaining at its later home until 2022.

Cyberjaya therefore represents not simply another relocation, but an attempt to give Selangor polo a permanent modern base from which the sport can grow.

Club to Open Polo and Riding to Wider Community

A central element of RSPEC’s new direction is accessibility.

The club emphasised that it is intended to operate as a public club rather than an exclusive membership institution.

Polo and riding packages for beginners and intermediate participants across different age groups are being developed, with riding-school activities expected to help introduce a new generation to equestrian sport.

RSPEC also plans to expand sporting, educational and community programmes, particularly those providing young people with opportunities to experience polo and horse riding.

The indoor arena will additionally support Riding for the Disabled Selangor, with equine-assisted activities expected to commence in January 2027.

The initiative expands the facility’s purpose beyond competitive sport towards community inclusion and therapeutic activity.

Silver Jubilee Cup Rescheduled

Syed Budriz also announced that the inaugural Sultan of Selangor Silver Jubilee Cup Polo Tournament has been postponed until early 2027 in anticipation of more favourable weather conditions.

The revised timing is intended to allow more spectators, supporters and polo enthusiasts to participate in the tournament.

In the interim, RSPEC and the Royal Pahang Polo Club will stage a Charity Shield Polo Tournament, an initiative conceived by the Sultan of Selangor and Sultan of Pahang.

Proceeds from the tournament are intended for charitable organisations in Selangor and Pahang, linking the sporting rivalry between the two royal clubs with a wider social purpose.

The gala also featured a Polo Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising contributions to the development of the sport, alongside appreciation for sponsors, donors and the RSPEC committee members involved in developing the club.

Cyberjaya Adds Sport Tourism Potential

The official opening of the new chapter for RSPEC also carries economic implications for Cyberjaya and Selangor.

A substantial equestrian complex can generate activity across events, hospitality, coaching, horse care, sports tourism and supporting services.

International and domestic polo tournaments can attract participants, spectators and associated spending while strengthening Selangor’s offering as a sporting destination.

That opportunity becomes more significant when facilities operate throughout the year rather than only during tournaments.

By combining polo and equestrian facilities with recreation, education and community programmes, RSPEC is seeking to create a broader ecosystem around the sport.

The Ledger Asia Insights

The significance of RSPEC’s new Cyberjaya home lies in the way it combines royal heritage, modern sporting infrastructure and public accessibility.

Polo has traditionally carried perceptions of exclusivity. RSPEC’s decision to explicitly position itself as a public club changes that proposition.

Opening riding programmes to beginners, developing young talent and incorporating Riding for the Disabled gives the facility a wider social function while potentially expanding Malaysia’s relatively small equestrian community.

There is also a longer-term sports-economy opportunity.

High-quality facilities can support coaching, competitions, tourism, hospitality and international sporting relationships. The connection between Selangor and Pahang’s royal polo traditions provides another foundation on which larger domestic tournaments could be developed.

Most importantly, the Cyberjaya development gives a sporting institution dating to 1902 a permanent platform for its next generation.

What began as the Sultan of Selangor’s vision four years ago has become a physical investment in Selangor’s sporting future. Its success will ultimately be measured not only by the quality of polo played on its field, but by whether RSPEC can make equestrian sport accessible to a broader community, nurture new Malaysian talent and establish Cyberjaya as a recognised destination for polo, recreation and sports tourism.
