KUALA LUMPUR: Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat Berhad has rolled out its Smart Unlimited Travel Pass in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.
Known as the Merdeka Unlimited Travel Pass, it offers SMART Tunnel users unlimited travel for a flat one-off fee of RM68, valid from Aug 16 to Sept 16.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the initiative could help daily commuters save up to RM64 a month compared with the average monthly toll of RM132.
He noted that the offer carries symbolic value, marking the nation’s 68th National Day and 15th Malaysia Day, and reflects a commitment to making public facilities more inclusive and beneficial to the people.
The launch ceremony, held yesterday at the SMART Management and Tunnel Operations Complex, was officiated by Nanta alongside Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Sazali Harun and Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat group CEO Muhammad Nizam Alias.
On average, SMART Tunnel users make 44 trips a month, with a one-way toll costing RM3. The pass not only offers substantial savings but also provides faster access to the city centre via a route used by roughly 19,000 vehicles daily.
As the world’s only dual-purpose tunnel for both traffic and floodwater management, the SMART Tunnel remains one of Malaysia’s most notable engineering feats, having earned accolades such as the United Nations Habitat Scroll of Honour Award, the British Construction Industry Award, and the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award. CNN has also listed it among the “Most Impressive Tunnels in the World.”
“This initiative shows how infrastructure providers can proactively help the public cope with rising living costs, particularly in urban areas,” Nanta said. “It also bolsters public confidence in the highway sector and aligns with the Malaysia Madani vision of balancing economic growth with social justice, grounded in respect and compassion.”
Nanta added there would be no free toll for National Day, as exemptions are typically limited to single-day festive periods.
