Putin Arrives in China as Russia Seeks Progress on Major Gas Pipeline Deal

BEIJING, 20 May 2026 – Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in China for talks with President Xi Jinping, with the long-delayed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline expected to be high on the agenda as Moscow seeks to deepen energy ties with Beijing amid global market instability.

Putin’s visit, his 25th to China, comes shortly after Xi hosted US President Donald Trump in Beijing, placing China at the centre of a major diplomatic sequence involving Washington and Moscow. The timing allows Beijing to project itself as a stable global power capable of managing great-power relationships while strengthening strategic coordination with Russia.
