Washington, United States, 25 August 2026 – A proposed 7.5% United States tariff on Chinese goods is emerging as a significant test of whether Washington and Beijing can preserve their trade truce before a planned leaders’ summit in September. The measure is being considered in response to allegations of excess manufacturing capacity, but the final rate and implementation structure have not been settled.

Those charges would sit on top of tariffs introduced during earlier administrations, meaning the effective burden would continue to vary materially by product and legacy tariff classification.
