Prabowo Threatens Permit Revocations as Indonesia Wildfires Choke Regional Air

Pekanbaru, Indonesia, 24 August 2026 – Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto has ordered authorities to revoke the permits of companies found responsible for forest and land fires, escalating the government’s response as smoke from Sumatra and Borneo contributes to hazardous air pollution across parts of Malaysia.

During a visit to Sumatra, Prabowo said police and prosecutors were investigating the fires. He warned that permits would be withdrawn if evidence showed corporations had instructed workers or contractors to clear land through burning.
